Once totally cut off from the rest of the home, this kitchen was opened up by removing a bearing wall and relocating dropped beams into the attic space above. A large skylight floods the space with daylight. A built-in cabinet in the hallway (left) holds family photos above and the music system below.
View from the family room. Custom cabinetry has a classic feel, but the hardware, laminate interiors and sleek drawer pulls are very modern. Granite counter tops and full backsplashes are smart choices and easy to maintain. In a small kitchen, the unbroken lines and expanses of natural stone allow a spacious feel. The former small living room is now a formal dining room since the wall separating the two was removed.

View into family room. The breakfast bar is a great place to talk to the cook, have a bite or do homework. The pendant lights add a bit of bright color. The family room is just steps away.

This 600 square foot guest apartment tucked under the veranda sits at pool level. It’s finished in a kitschy, 1940’s Hawaiian style. Ikea cabinets offer a low cost, high style solution for the kitchen. The island is made of two banks of Ikea cabinets wrapped with bamboo. The bar top is crafted from a plank of mahogany shaped like an early style surfboard. Bright yellow porcelain tile is set off by shiny black trim. The concrete floor is treated with an acid stain and finished with a penetrating sealer in a matte finish to keep wet feet from slipping.
