Day Valley Residence
Day Valley
Aptos, California
Custom home designed by Russell J. Short, Architect. 2800 square foot plantation style home fits right in to its Aptos country setting
Exterior Views
Stucco exterior with elastomeric paint, composition roof in a slate green color to reflect heat. Wrap-around veranda allows plenty of outdoor living space. Passive solar design of large porch overhangs and eaves shield home from summer sun, allow lower winter sun into the interior and protect doors and windows from direct contact with rain. 27 fiberglass columns act as veranda roof supports and when painted, have the look of wood with none of the maintenance issues. The veranda ceilings and soffits are covered with vinyl material that gives the appearance of bead board and never needs painting. The veranda floor is simply exterior grade plywood coated with Acriflex (a flexible acrylic coating that can be matched to any color). The non-skid properties of this material allow it to be safe when wet.
Interior
Cast concrete stairs compliment the Italian tile flooring used throughout the home. The tile absorbs heat from winter sun by day and helps keep the home comfortable. Radiant heat provides subtle warmth from the floors. There is no air blowing from heat registers or filters to change. This system has five heat zones, each with its own thermostat.
Kitchen
The craftsman style cabinetry is made of Douglas Fir and the craftsman theme is continued throughout the rest of the home. Poured-in-place concrete countertops provide a seamless surface that is sealed to repel stains. The cook top features a pop-up hood so it can be located in front of a view window. The large island conceals 2 ovens and features a vegetable prep sink.
Great Room
The ceiling height in this room is a soaring 20 with clerestory windows to allow daylight in at every angle. Anderson sliding doors are wood clad on the interior and vinyl clad on the exterior.
