Depot Hill Beach House
Capitola, California

1999 Open Architecture Tour

New home completed 1999. This gem was built on the site of a 50-year old family vacation home. Featured on the Open Architecture Tour of Homes in 1999. Architect: Jaquie Low, Boone and Low Architects.

Exterior (Rear)
Exterior (Front)
The rear of the home opens up to fabulous views of the Monterey Bay. The flashings and downspouts are all copper to withstand the assault of salt air. The shingled exterior and trim detailing hint of a Victorian feel, echoing the original homes built on Depot Hill in the 1800's.

The master bedroom at the left features a cupola to allow additional light into the space and is another nod to the vernacular architecture. A clear glass windscreen doubles as a railing on the upstairs deck.

The front of this vacation home is designed with low landscape maintenance in mind, plenty of off-street parking in a very densely pouplated neighborhood.

Kitchen
Great Room
The spacious kitchen opens up to the great room to allow casual family gatherings. The custom beadboard cabinets fit beautifully with the home's retro feel but are modern in every way. Clean, white tile is paired with a tumbled marble back splash. Appliances are "invisible" with beadboard front panels.

Custom trusses run the length of this second story kitchen/great room. The high ceilings are lined with whitewashed tounge and groove pine paneling which warms up this open space. Plenty of mullioned wood windows take in the bay views. Hickory floors add warmth and allow for easy maitenance in this beach home.

Master Bathroom
Downstairs Bathroom
A Japanese-style soaking tub feels right at home in this master bath surrounded by beadboard wainscoting, and gleaming white porcelain tile set in a running bond pattern. A marble vanity top hints at "Victoriana". The warm, creamy wall color is enhanced by the crisp, white wainscot throughout the home.

This bathroom features an outside entry and a wheelchair accessible shower and sink vanity. The owners' oar doubles as a custom towel bar. Durable tile set in a diamond pattern makes perfect sense for this hardworking room.

The hallway wainscot is 4' high board & batten style, featuring a baseboard with a rope trim motif.

Master Bedroom
The cozy master bedroom feels like an aerie with it's crow's nest-like cupola and expanse of windows.
