Client Needs
These Seascape homeowners came to Talmadge Construction needing a qualified remodeling firm to design and build a large ocean front deck with a built-in hot tub. Coastal homes are frequently exposed to harsh elements like moisture-fraught air, bright sunlight, strong winds, and saltwater corrosion. Of utmost importance to them was building the deck out of materials that would withstand the harsh, ocean-front elements.
Talmadge Solution
Talmadge Construction recommended using Ipe decking tiles (pronounced “ee-pay”), which is an exotic hardwood that is naturally resistant to rot and decay, and is prized for its beautiful brown and amber tones, as well as its impressive density.
The deck skirt is made from stacked and staggered 1″ x 6″ Ipe deck boards. Around the deck perimeter, Talmadge Construction installed light handrails with stainless steel posts and cable railing, creating a modern look that tied with the rest of the home and allowed unobstructed views of the ocean.
Challenge
When laying the tile on the deck, we had to work around the location of the hot tub and existing deck conditions. We also had to custom-frame the deck to accommodate the 2′ x 2′ Ipe tiles.
Result
The end result was a gorgeous, weather-resistant deck that provides a breathtaking 180-degree view of the ocean. Priceless!
