Inspired by Caroline’s Non Profit Thrift Shop

In January 2020, Jeff and Adele Talmadge, were invited to attend the “Annual Gifting Reception” celebration held by Caroline’s Non-Profit Thrift Store. Using the proceeds from the store, Caroline’s founder, Christy Licker, provides donations to local organizations that serve children in our Santa Cruz County community. This past year, Caroline’s was able to give away over $700,000 to local charities!

Last year, Jeff had been working with Christy and her team to remodel the store’s building at the corner of Trout Gulch and Aptos Street in Aptos, California, using donated materials and labor. With a stroke of luck, Caroline’s was relocated to another location across the street (the former Print Smith space), and Christy was able to sell the original building and give away the proceeds — a win-win for the community!

During the celebration held at Resurrection Church in Aptos, Jeff and Adele were completely surprised to hear their names mentioned when Christy looked over and said the following: “Jeff and Adele Talmadge and Talmadge Construction do so much for our community, much of it very quietly. You were an integral part of the building of the CASA House, worked with Habitat for Humanity, donated countless hours to local schools, individuals, and local nonprofits. You two are the very best models of community.

“For these reasons and to thank you for all you have done and continue to do for Caroline’s, we have established the Talmadge Community Service Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 ($2,500 each) to be awarded each year to two Cabrillo College graduates who are continuing their education at a four-year university or technical school AND who have demonstrated a commitment to community service and philanthropy. It is our hope that your example will inspire others and especially young people to offer their time and talents, as you two have, to make their communities better places, again, as the two you of have done.”

Our commitment to our community is stronger than ever, and we are so appreciative of Christy and her Board of Directors for establishing an endowment in our name.
