Deck design and remodeling projects are among of our favorite projects to work on in the Santa Cruz area. We recently completed a deck rebuild for a client whose home included an exquisite view of Rio Del Mar beach in Aptos. This client had two top priorities for this project: accentuating the view and staying within the budget.
We used tempered glass panels on ocean-facing sections of the railing. These tempered glass panels are durable enough for this outside space, and this design detail kept the space open to maintain that gorgeous view.
Outside of the view of this photo, the remaining sections of the railing were all constructed using wooden rails instead of tempered glass. Tempered glass panels are a costly option, so this decision to use wooden rails helped keep this project within budget for our client.
The deck was built using redwood 2 x 6 decking, which is very fitting for a deck on the central California coast, and the surrounding oak trees add to an organic ambiance. The end result is this impressive deck on an Aptos hillside with a grand view of Monterey Bay. Check out some of our other exterior design projects, and contact us if you’re interested in adding a similar deck to your home.
We just remodeled our balcony with new glass panels, but my biggest concern is protecting and keeping them clean. I was pleased to see that they were very easy to install. Before, when we had a regular wooden railing, I didn’t like how our view was mostly blocked. The glass panels allow us to get a view almost as beautiful as the one in the picture. We have a lovely view of a lake, but it doesn’t get as impressive a sunset as this one.
